Your Complete Guide to
New Jersey Cannabis

Everything you need to know about possession limits, purchase requirements, and visiting CannaBar — New Jersey's premier cannabis dispensary experience.

What are the recreational possession limits in New Jersey?

Understanding legal limits for adults 21+

Adults aged 21 and older may legally possess up to 6 ounces (170 grams) of cannabis and cannabis products in total. This comprehensive limit includes any combination of flower, concentrates, edibles, and other cannabis forms.

Purchase Limits Per Transaction While possession allows up to 6 ounces, single-transaction purchases at dispensaries are limited to the equivalent of 1 ounce (28.35 grams) of usable cannabis:
  • 1 ounce of dried flower
  • 4 grams of concentrates or resin
  • 4 grams of vaporized oil
  • 1,000 mg of ingestible products (e.g., 10 x 100 mg edibles)
  • Any combination totaling the 1-ounce equivalent

Important: It is illegal to transport cannabis across state lines, even if purchased legally in New Jersey. Possession exceeding 6 ounces may result in civil penalties or criminal charges depending on the quantity.

How much can medical patients purchase each month?

Monthly allotments for registered patients

Registered medical cannabis patients can purchase up to 3 ounces (84 grams) of cannabis within a 30-day period, as authorized by their healthcare provider. Terminal patients may have no restrictions based on physician recommendations.

Key Requirements for Medical Patients Always carry your Medical Cannabis Program (MCP) card and valid ID when possessing or transporting medicinal cannabis.
  • Purchases must be made at licensed Alternative Treatment Centers (ATCs) or dispensaries
  • Caregivers can be designated to purchase on behalf of patients
  • Medical cannabis must be kept in original packaging
  • Home cultivation is not permitted
  • Sharing medical cannabis with others is prohibited

Medical patients enjoy tax benefits and priority access during product shortages, making registration worthwhile for regular users.

Can I consume cannabis products in public spaces?

Where you can and cannot use cannabis

Cannabis consumption is primarily restricted to private property where the owner permits it. Public consumption is illegal and can result in fines or other penalties.

Legal Consumption Areas New in 2025: Licensed consumption areas at select dispensaries now allow on-site use in designated spaces.
  • Private residences (unless prohibited by landlord or HOA)
  • Licensed consumption areas at participating dispensaries
  • Private events with explicit permission

Prohibited locations include: Parks, beaches, sidewalks, vehicles, schools, workplaces (unless permitted), and federal property.

Consumption Area Rules: Must be 21+ with valid ID, no alcohol permitted, tobacco products prohibited, and some locations may restrict bringing personal cannabis for recreational users (medical patients can bring their own).

Are all products lab-tested for safety and potency?

Quality assurance and testing standards

Absolutely! All cannabis products sold at CannaBar undergo rigorous third-party laboratory testing before reaching our shelves. New Jersey maintains some of the strictest testing standards in the nation.

2025 Enhanced Testing Standards New regulations require smaller batch sizes (up to 33.07 pounds) for more accurate testing and enhanced labeling requirements for complete transparency.

Every product is tested for:

  • Potency levels (THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids)
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury)
  • Microbials (mold, bacteria, yeast)
  • Residual solvents from extraction
  • Foreign matter and contaminants

How to verify: Look for the Certificate of Analysis (COA) QR code on packaging, or ask our knowledgeable budtenders for detailed test results. Products that fail any test are destroyed and never reach consumers.
