What's actually inside your vape cart — and why it matters. A side-by-side breakdown of the two most common cartridge types sold at New Jersey dispensaries.
Live resin is made from cannabis plants that are flash-frozen immediately after harvest — never dried or cured. This preserves terpenes that would otherwise evaporate, resulting in a concentrate that closely mirrors the aroma and flavor of the living plant.
Fresh plants cryogenically frozen at -20 to -40°F within minutes, locking in the full terpene profile.
Extraction at very low temperatures using hydrocarbon solvents, preserving volatile compounds heat would destroy.
Retains minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC) alongside THC, plus the original terpene ratios of each strain.
Tastes like the actual strain. No terpenes added after the fact — what you taste is what the plant produced.

Distillate is a highly refined cannabis oil processed to isolate THC to 85-95%+ purity. The extraction strips away nearly all original terpenes, flavonoids, and minor cannabinoids. Terpenes are typically re-added afterward for flavor.
Starts with traditionally dried cannabis or trim. The plant has already lost most of its volatile terpenes.
Crude extract goes through winterization, decarb, and short-path distillation — separating cannabinoids by boiling point.
Nearly odorless, flavorless, translucent oil that's 85-95% pure THC. Minor cannabinoids and terpenes are gone.
Flavor from terpenes re-introduced post-processing — either cannabis-derived (CDT) or botanical (BDT).

The key differences that matter when you're standing at the counter deciding which cart to buy.
Higher THC% does not mean a better experience. Many users report that live resin carts at 75–85% THC feel stronger than distillate at 90%+ due to the entourage effect from terpenes and minor cannabinoids working together.
Both products serve different needs. Here's an honest breakdown of each.
What to expect when shopping for vape cartridges at a New Jersey dispensary. Prices vary by brand, size, and oil type.
0.5g (Half Gram) — $28–$60

Misconceptions we hear every day at the counter. Let's clear them up.
The single biggest misconception. Terpenes and minor cannabinoids modulate the high. A 75% live resin cart can hit harder than a 92% distillate.
Distillate is real cannabis, just highly refined. The THC molecule is identical to what's in flower. What's missing is the supporting cast of compounds.
Quality varies by flower quality, freeze timing, and extraction method. Some brands cut live resin with distillate to reduce cost — look for "100% live resin" on labels.
A "Sour Diesel" distillate cart has Sour Diesel terpenes added for flavor — not the full chemical profile. With live resin, the strain name reflects the actual plant used.
All licensed NJ products are lab-tested for residual solvents before sale. Legal, regulated products are tested to parts-per-million standards. This is only a concern with black-market products.
